Complete Care have been working with me since 2005. Having supported me through university, they now help me to live independently in my own home.
I suffer from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular, genetic condition that means I needs 24 hour care. Complete Care been working with me for the last ten years. In 2005 I left my parents’ home in Norfolk for university – pursuing a degree in media & communications at Birmingham City University.
Complete Care worked closely with me to put in place full time support that would enable me to live independently as I embarked on student life. Having completed my studies, I decided to remain in Birmingham and now live in my own apartment.
How did Complete Care help me?
I have a team of six personal care assistants (PAs) who help with my personal care and day-to-day living tasks. A young and bubbly team, my team not only act as carers, but as friends too.
I live a very independent life with the assistance of my team, who work flexibly around my lifestyle and interests. I have an active social life, enjoy shopping and going out, and have a number of hobbies – including playing powerchair football. I trains for three hours every week, and attend matches in Nottingham; I’m fully supported by my team, who drive me to matches and assist me while I’m there.
What difference has it made in my life?
My team have really helped me to live life to the full, as independently as possible. My team have built really strong relationships with me over the last decade, boosting my confidence, and supporting me to do things I never thought possible, like travelling abroad. I’ve recently been on a trip to Amsterdam; with my team’s support it was both easy and hassle free, not to mention fun!
